I Had a near miss accident driving Home after a long shift
When I was working as a Registrar (doctor in a training post in England) in Kent, normally we had to follow a rota that was pretty intense. At the time I had to do 3 night shifts one week, and 4 night shifts the following week. So work started at 21:00 until 09:00. But sometimes I would only leave the hospital after the post take round around 10:00.
Because I lived in North London, It was a long drive, 44 miles away , around 1h and 30 minutes by car .
Needless to say, I decided to drive before breakfast one day and had a near miss accident after a long shift on my way home.
A lot of things went though my mind when I almost fell asleep on the wheel.
That made me realize 2 things: I needed to move nearer to the hospital or change hospitals and sort out my worklife. So I did!
I moved nearer to the hospital, started a new post as a Registrar without night shifts. And on top of that, I could cycle to work, how cool was that?
That is how I swapped from Acute Medicine, Cardiology life to Dermatology training. I was in heaven! I worked 40 h a week, but the previous post was a crazy 44-60h/some weeks.
People ask me if I miss working for the NHS, and the answer is a big fat NO!
We can decide what way we want our life to go and what career path you want to take.
Remembering that I am not only a Doctor, I am also a mother, daughter, wife, sports maniac and nature lover!
We don't have to wear a job title 24/7. Do you agree?
By for now!
